Stats: Automobile Accidents

There are many published statistics relating to automobile accidents in this country. Some of these statistics are based upon extensive and detailed studies conducted over a long period of time. Others have been reported frequently in various media sources. We have listed some of the more commonly published statistics.

1. Automobile Accident Fatalities
Each year more than 42,000 Americans die and almost 2,000,000 more are injured in automobile accidents.

2. Driving Too Fast Is Major Factor In Auto Accidents
In 2000, 12,350 lives were lost in speeding related accidents.

3. Driver Age and Gender As Factors in Auto Accidents
Drivers under the age of 25 had the highest rate of fatal crashes

4. Large Trucks Contribute to Traffic Fatalities
One out of 9 traffic fatalities in 2000 involved a large truck

5. The Deadliest Times That Accidents Occur
Midnight to 3 a.m. on Saturdays is the deadliest three hour period for automobile accidents in this country.

6. Auto Crashes By Weather Condition and Light Condition
Most auto crashes occur in normal weather conditions during daylight hours.

7. Unrestrained Passengers Killed More Frequently
It is estimated that 135,102 lives were saved by the use of safety belts. 11,889 of that number were saved in the year 2000 alone.
